Atma Jaya University


Atma Jaya University is an institute of higher learning in Jakarta, Indonesia.

History

The possibility of the formation of a Catholic University in Indonesia was first raised in Jakarta in June 1952. The first Catholic Universities in Indonesia were established in 1955 in Bandung (Parahyangan Catholic University) and Yogyakarta (Sanata Dharma University).

The Atma Jaya Institute in Jakarta was established by a group of Catholic intellectuals on the 1st June 1960. The Institute established a Catholic institution of higher learning called the Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia. The university is one of the few lay Catholic universities in Asia.

Faculties

Economics

The Economics Faculty was established on the 11th July 1960 and is the oldest faculty in the University. The first lectures were held in October 1960 in the "Corporate Economics" (now Management) degree programme, at the time the only degree programme available. In 1974, an Accounting degree was made available, followed by Development Economics in 1992.

Administration Studies

Administration Studies was the second faculty, established on 11 July 1960 as the Social and Politics Faculty. It was renamed in 1970 as the Faculty of Social Studies, and was renamed again to become the Faculty of Business Administration in 1985/86 in accordance with a government regulations.

Education and Teaching

The Faculty of Education was created in 1961 as a development of the Bonaventura B-one course. It had three streams, Education, English and History, although the History stream was dropped in 1964. In 1965 the faculty was renamed the Faculty of Education, with two streams, Public Education and English. In order to bring it into line with other institutions of further education, in 1980 the name was changed once more to become the Faculty of Education and Teaching.

Engineering Faculty

The Faculty of Engineering was opened on the 1 July 1961 with a single stream, mechanical engineering. In 1979, a second stream was introduced, electrical engineering, and a third in 1999, industrial engineering.

Law

The law faculty was opened on 3 July 1965.

Medicine

The Faculty of Medicine was opened on the 27 December, 1967 and at that time was the only Faculty of Medicine in any Catholic University in Indonesia to achieve an 'A' accreditation. When it was opened, the faculty was located in the Saint Carolus Hospital, while lab work was carried out in conjunctionwith the Medical Faculty at the University of Indonesia. After the opening of the Atma Jaya Hospital in 1975, clinical work moved to this hospital, followed by the rest of the faculty in 1991.

Psychology

The Faculty of Psychology was opened in 1992. In accordance with changes in the national curriculum, the faculty is not divided into streams, but has 6 departments - Education Psychology, Industrial and Organisational Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Social Psychology and Experimental Psychology.

Biotechnology

The Faculty of Biotechnology was opened in 2002 with the hope that it would contribute to the professional growth and development of professionals in the field of biotechnology. The Faculty includes programmes of study in the following areas: Environmental and Industrial Biology, Medical Biotechnology, Bioinformatics and Bio-ethics. With the opening of this faculty, Atma Jaya became the first university in Indonesia to have a faculty of Biotechnology.

Post-graduate studies

On 16 October 1992, Atma Jaya University began offering a Masters Degree in Linguistics, with a focus on the English Language. On 4 October 1993, this was followed by the introduction of a Masters Degree in Management.
